How might we bolster economic development through interventions in the public way?
We worked alongside the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, STL Architects, and Studio ARQ to imagine, design, and install structures to house outdoor activations along a stretch of Division Street in Humboldt Park known as Paseo Boricua.
PROCESS
We worked alongside the community, stakeholders, and the greater project team to select three core locations for activations along the corridor and design structures to house activities. These efforts were intended to complement other efforts put forth by the Puerto Rican Cultural Center to drive foot traffic and boost economic development, such as hosting weekly events and regular markets.
SOLUTION
Wooden modules that are easy to assemble were designed to create functional and dynamic space that previously did not exist for pop up markets, performances, and dining along the corridor.
These repetitive wooden structures, each with its own theme, are expressive in both form and function. Additional wooden structures designed by Studio ARQ were installed across the street. This complementary installation is intended to provide a playful series of gateways and platforms to engage with.
