How might we use art to celebrate neighborhood history while supporting local businesses?

We collaborated with South Chicago Parents and Friends and SSA #5 to redesign South Chicago’s main business corridor. The goal was to increase foot traffic and encourage business owners to take care of the public space surrounding their storefronts.

PROCESS

Working alongside the community and stakeholders, we explored ways to pay homage to the neighborhood’s history while attracting patrons to local businesses. The design process introduced unique and low cost interventions to make the corridor more inviting and walkable, with areas to gather and interact with local businesses while reflecting local voices through art.

SOLUTION

We designed and installed market stalls for local vendors, streetscape elements, and planters, along with incorporating commissioned art and performance spaces.

Titled “Who Tells Your Story,” the project features four zones that house different types of activities, including art/performance, commercial, health/family programs, and an area for visitors to learn about the community.

Unique furnishings installed on sidewalks encourage both movement and rest from passersby. “Art Stacks” provide additional experiential design along the corridor, and wood panels are secured by steel plates to allow additional canvases for artwork.
