How might we create a community driven health services center designed to improve overall black maternal health equity?

NDoula Community Alliance (NDCA) is a community building organization aimed at addressing quality of life gaps within Chicago’s marginalized communities by increasing access to patient-centered, equitable, integrative healthcare. The organization’s programs and initiatives are specifically centered around addressing the Black Maternal Health Crisis. NDCA was selected as a Cycle 3 awardee of our Design Services Program. The organization engaged us to provide the vision for a new health services center.

PROCESS

We held a community engagement workshop with NDoula’s board, staff, and mentees to gather feedback around the needs and desires of this future health services center, from the actual facility itself to the preferred neighborhood for it to be constructed in.

SOLUTION

We built on the feedback shared from the NDoula team and stakeholders to develop the Resiliency Center Vision–a framework for a safe and community oriented facility designed to uplift and restore while forging bonds among visitors.

This free community naturopathic health services and birthwork center is designed to positively impact overall health equity for black women, and provide care to alleviate the Black Maternal Health Crisis. We developed feasibility studies, area parameters, and an overall space and program planning package for NDoula to use for future stakeholder and funder engagement.
