How might we expand an existing community-focused event space from a small interior setting to a larger outdoor public space?
Principle Barbers, a community-driven barber shop and event space in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood, was a Cycle 3 awardee of our Design Services Program. The organization engaged us to support with the creation of an outdoor entertainment space near the barbershop designed to engage and restore access to creative expression through music, arts, dance, and more.
PROCESS
We worked alongside North Lawndale residents to host a series of community engagement sessions. These sessions centered around understanding what residents would and would not like to see in this space, what ideas they had around the space’s layout, and any other thoughts and ideas around the needs of the community.
SOLUTION
Using feedback from the community engagement sessions and inspiration from other similar community driven event spaces, we created the design for Timbre Square–a public outdoor performance space that cultivates a specific ambience that showcases Lawndale’s neighborhood voices.
Timbre Square is meant to display the multitude of local talent and provide people with a platform to share their uniqueness and culture through music and more.
Using the materials created through this collaboration, Principle Barbers will have conversations with Chicago funders and stakeholders to make this vision a reality while continuing to investigate the feasibility and acquisition of the proposed site.
